CHAPTER 11
PIPER
âDaddy doesnât like the green kind,â Emely said knowledgeably from where I was dicing vegetables at the counter. Her little brown eyes were wide with wonder, the apron she had tied on her somehow making her look just that much more like she belonged in the immaculate duplex kitchen.
âDaddy doesnât know what he likes,â I answered irritably before I could stop myself, pushing bell peppers around the cutting board and wiping the seeds off of the edge with a sigh.
I shouldnât have said that. It wasnât fair to Emely.
Sheâd moved in two weeks before and she had been nothing but ecstatic about spending the summer with Oliver, even with my watching her while he was at work. It wasnât her fault that Oliver had been playing hot and cold ever since heâd fucked me on the couch, refusing to give into what I had thought had been a very reasonable suggestion to taking me out.
That didnât stop him from crawling up under the covers of my bed most nights or dragging me into his room whenever Emely fell asleep at night though.
There were days that it felt like I was living in some alternate reality, taking care of Emely while Oliver danced me around the kitchen and teased me⦠and others, where I felt like the only reason I was here at all, was to watch Emely and warm Oliverâs bed at night for him so that he could play the part of the good father.
And even in the worst of it, I still wanted to be with Oliver every chance that I got.
âMy mom says men rarely do,â Emely said with all the wiseness of a grown woman and none of the understanding.
I snorted, grinning at her as I added the green bell peppers to the vegetable mixture. He had always said he hated them, but Iâd watched him eat plenty of dishes and enjoy them if he wasnât told they were there.
âWell, maybe-â I stopped as my phone went off, the shrill ring persistent as I dropped the knife and reached across the counter.
âHello? No, Emely, leave the knife, Iâll finish it in a second,â I murmured distractedly, moving the knife further out of her reach and instead pushing the cutting board over so that she could get the rest of the seeds off of the peppers instead.
âItâs good to hear that you arenât letting your niece get into the knives,â my father laughed on the other end of the phone. âI was worried, not hearing from you the last few days.â
âYou were not,â I returned with a roll of my eyes, getting the tomatoes for the spaghetti sauce crushed and added to the pot so that I could keep everything moving. There were whole days, even living in his house, that my father could go without talking to me due to business. âYou want something otherwise you would have just texted me.â
My father chuckled unashamedly. âI need you to come by later this evening if youâre available.
